What I Learned from Participating in #PitMad

You might be asking: What is #PitMad?

#PitMad is the hashtag for a quarterly event that takes place on Twitter where writers tweet their 280-character pitch for their unpublished book or novel. Literary agents can then show interest by liking or favoriting your tweet.

The first event of the year took place this past Thursday. I had never heard of #PitMad until a few weeks ago when I saw people tweeting about it. I wanted to know more and learn how I could participate, so like any good writer should, I googled it. That led me to the Pitch Wars website. I was happy to learn I still had time to prepare and participate so I wrote #PitMad on my calendar and waited.

I’d actually just signed up for Twitter back in January. I joined Twitter hoping to connect with other writers and agents this year so #PitMad seemed like a great opportunity to do just that. I finished my novel in Spring of 2020 and have been querying it to agents ever since. I sent a total of 26 queries last year and received 13 rejections.

For those who might not know, a query letter is what a writer sends to an agent to sell their book and try to get representation. Some agents want just a letter. Some want you to include a synopsis of your book. Some might also want to read the first chapter, or the first ten pages, or the first…
